Question: How can therapy help?
Answer:
- Therapy can help you feel that you are not alone in your struggles
- It can give you a chance to pause and really think about how you are currently living
- Therapy can help you identify areas in your life that are no longer working for you and behaviours that are getting in the way of your relationships and/or happiness
- Therapy can be life changing
Question: What is the difference between a psychiatrist and psychotherapy?
Answer:
- Psychotherapy is usually performed by a psychologist, social worker or other professional who has attained a masters in a counselling field.
- A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialized in diagnosing and treating mental disorders. A psychiatrist can diagnose and prescribe medication.
Question: Are my sessions confidential?
Answer:
All sessions with me are confidential. This means that I will not share any information with a third party without your written consent. However there are three exceptions to this rule.
- Imminent risk of harm to yourself or someone else;
- Disclosure of current child abuse or neglect;
- If you are involved in a court case in which the judge summons or subpoenas your file.
Question: Are there any risks?
Answer:
There are no guarantees that therapy is effective. There are also no firm timeframes. Some individuals engage in brief therapy while others find more intensive psychotherapy more helpful. Most change takes place outside of the actual therapeutic session and is driven by you.
Therapy can also elicit feelings of sadness, anger, fear and guilt. These are common reactions and are an important part of personal exploration and change. With time this type of reaction lessens and a sense of well-being increases.
